Canadian Psychologists

The Province of Ontario…

The requirements for registration as Psychologists in Ontario are: an undergraduate degree in psychology, doctoral degree in clinical psychology, another year of supervised practice by two registered psychologists, and the passing of three exams. Master’s-level practitioners in Ontario are registered as Psychological Associates. Psychological Associates would have at least 4 years of supervised clinical work experience by a member of CPBAO before they are awarded the registration. This would be similar to the idea of an “apprenticeship model”.

“Psychologist” and “Psychological Associate” are legally protected titles. Both Psychologists and Psychologist Associate can diagnose psychological conditions and provide psychological therapy.

Other Provinces…

Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Manitoba, British Columbia, and Prince Edward Island share same educational requirement of a doctoral degree to be registered as Psychologist. However, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia have a minimum requirement of master’s degree. Because of this discrepancy, you may occasionally see a master’s-level psychologist in Ontario as they might have been registered in another province.
